Artist's Comments

I drew this in between colouring the One Question picture (which still has a lot of colouring left). I halfway wanted to see how I could draw in ink. There are a lot of errors that I can't fix and, well, will have to leave to do better next time. There are also invisible strings on the erhu...because I didn't want to figure out how I would put them in without messing everything up. I also need to figure out how to use negative space properly.

And I also did this because I wanted to blatantly copy the style (actually just the way he used the ink, I should hope my art looks like my art) of the person who illustrates 12 Kingdoms. See here for reference:

I think I should have just used the brush pen rather than all the pens, but who knows.

The characters are Naru and his wife, Ilesriel. I not-so-secretly think they're totally hawt together, pointlessly intricate background design or not. I just don't think they translated to paper so well. Those of you who read the script should recognise Naru as the bastard who picks on small children.

Download for full view of pointlessly intricate background.

I think it looks great. Much crisper than the pencils you usually have up here. And yes I think your style definitely stayed intact.

Yeah, ink generally makes things crisper and more defined, which is why it's also devilishly hard to deal with because that mistake is there and it's a going to be there forever and a day. I just feel it's got too much of the meticulous me in some parts which is why I think I should have just used the brush pen, but I'll have to experiment.

I tried using a brush pen, but found it to be too sloppy, I switched to micron pens and it really made it just like drawing.

Len, will you quit with all the fancy animals and moziecs! you make me feel bad (just kidding)

no, seriously, if this is just a test, then bloody... that's just bloody amazing. you should be ashamed of saying that there are mistakes. cause I'm having a difficult time finding any.

it makes me wonder what Auron and Riana would look like in your style....

"Help me darling. I have a krink in my neck."
"Don't worry my sweet. A few good whacks with this erhu thing and you'll be just fine. By the way, have you seen my strings?"

"Oh that's right I used them to garrote my last wife. AHAHAHAHAAHAHA!"

Also awsome inking.

The thing with a brush pen is that you have to be careful to take advantage of the tip which is really the only place that gives you true line variation from super thin to thick. Microns are good for technical work, they just don't bring out much "personality" in my view because of the line variation thing. The width of variation is limited to the size of the nib. With brush pens, generally the look that you're supposed to go for is the loose Chinese ink wash style, but they're also a lot harder to control because of the way you have to (or probably should) hold them. A sumi-e or Chinese Calligraphy brush is pretty much an indicator of what the brush pen is like. Which is also why most artists recommend you use an actual brush and ink rather than the brush pen. More control with the same line variation range.

"it makes me wonder what Auron and Riana would look like in your style...."

That would be interesting...hmmmm. But I should finish the current pile of stuff before I do that (namely colouring Cheeko's present, which is taking much longer than I originally anticipated ,bloody leaves I tel you!). But hey, I'll keep that in mind for another practice run, which I'll have to do soon enough anyway. =3

I really should quite all those designs, they make my head hurt. XD The mistakes are purely anatomical, especially how I did Naru's legs . I tried fixing it superficially with the feet, but honestly I should have been more careful when I started at the initial drawing phase. =P

I agree, because I have no idea how I do it. Outside of self-punishment. XD
